Year 3 and 4 Spring Term 2023 A Very warm welcome to the class of Year 3 and 4. The class teacher is Miss Elan Jones and throughout this term we will be focusing on the theme “Travel”. Here is a brief description of what we will be studying in each of the areas of learning and experience: Languages, Literacy and Communication: As a part of our class routine, we will be completing our work through the medium of welsh for two weeks and then through the medium of English for another two weeks. We will discuss, read and learn how to write a script, newspaper article, diary, headlines, agenda, post card and so on. Our book for this term will be ‘Twm Bach ar y Mimosa’ by Sian Lewis and we will be using this book as a focal point to plan our tasks and activities in the Classroom. Additionally, we will have “Read, Write, Inc” sessions each morning in order to develop and improve the learner’s English spelling skills. Mathematics and Numeracy: The main units we will be concentrating on this half term will be fractions, functions and graphs, time, length, structure, data, estimating, methematical reasoning and developing mental maths skills. We will then move on to develop different skills after the half term. Science and Technology: Throughout the term we will be focusing on STEM projects that encorage innovative thinking by doing tasks such as building a strong bridge out of spaghetti, testing water-resistant materials and studying car mechanics. The Humanities: We will be studying: the history of the settlement in Patagonia; the development of transportation over the years; comparing Wales and Patagonia’s landscape and traditions; and will also focus on the story of Mary Jones and her Bible. Health and Well-being: Every Friday, we will have our swimming lesson in Ruthin. Additionally, the learners will also get a chance to complete the “milltir fawr – the big mile” twice a week to ensure that we improve our physical and mental health. In addition to keeping ourselves fit and healthy, there will be a strong emphasis on how to have a good relationship with your mental health. We will discuss issues such as bullying, online safety and positive relationshipsy. At the root of our health and well-being lessons, we will learn about the connection between a healthy body and a healthy mind. Expressive Arts: We will start by creating various artworks but our main focus will be on the theme ‘habitat’. Additionally, we are extremely lucky to be offered a music workshop to develop the pupil’s musical ability and understanding. Drama skills will be a natural part of our classroom through their oral and performance work. Digital Competence: Digital competence is a very powerful skill to develop towards the future and I will be ensuring that the learners will get plenty of experience to research independently and develop basic computer skills. To familiarise ourselves with these skills, we will be doing much of our work on Google Classroom. Homework: The children will receive mathematics homework every two weeks and in between, they will receive homework based on our theme of “celebrations”. The homework will be set each Friday and is also expected to be completed by the following Friday. We look forward to having a busy and fun time with the children and thank you very much for your support.
