Years 1 and 2 Autumn Term A very warm welcome to the Year 1 and 2 class, to the children and the parents. The class teacher is Miss Hughes with Miss Elen Jones and Auntie Kaya assisting. Mrs Lloyd will be teaching Art every other Thursday afternoon and Mrs Edwards will be teaching music every other Wednesday afternoon. P.E. lessons will be on a Monday and Friday. The children will need appropriate clothes and they can keep their P.E. kit at school. Reading books will be changed on a Friday and the children will need to bring their reading bags to school every day. It’s very important that you read with your child every day and we appreciate your comments in the ‘reading record’. We would like to encourage you to discuss the class activities with your child and to bring in any relevant pictures, books, artefacts and ideas for guest speakers. Our theme this term is ‘Me In My School Jumper.’ Language - we will be concentrating on writing a report, instructions, explaining and persuasion, posters, rules, personal letter, portrait, description, lists, invitations and e mails. Personal, Social, Well-Being and Cultural Diversity - personal hygiene and safety, school rules, the importance of exercise and healthy food and drink, discuss emotions and feelings and realise that other people and children have feelings as well, realise that plants and pets need to be cared for, discuss the children’s heroes. Mathematics - addition, subtraction, place value, temperature, simple graphs, sorting using more than one criterion, estimate,  odd and even numbers, mass, money, fractions, (multiplication and division Y.2.) Knowledge and Understanding of the World – the names of different parts of the body and plants, discuss the differences between various animals and plants in order to sort them accordingly, discuss the five senses, discuss the similarities and differences between themselves and other children, how the weather affects certain animals, how some materials change shape when they are heated or chilled, how we can affect the environment in a positive or negative way, begin to recognise the differences between  ways of life at different times in history. Physical Development – simple team games involving competing and cooperation, using small equipment e.g. bean bags, hoops and balls. Creative Development - learning and performing various songs and keeping rhythm and ‘playing’ various musical instruments. The work of the artist Tim Pugh. Religious Education - Jesus calming the storm, the story of the wind and sun, the effect that the weather has on people’s lives in different parts of the world, writing a simple prayer, Harvest Thanksgiving, the Christmas story.
